Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is the most widely used material in flexible packaging — and for good reason. Its unique molecular structure gives it properties that make it ideal for everything from grocery bags to industrial liners.
What Makes LDPE Different
LDPE is produced through high-pressure polymerization of ethylene gas. The result is a polymer with significant branching in its molecular chain, which gives it lower density and greater flexibility compared to HDPE. This branching is what makes LDPE bags soft, pliable, and easy to seal.
Key Properties
- Flexibility — LDPE film is soft and conforms to product shapes, making it ideal for wrapping irregular items.
- Moisture resistance — Excellent barrier against water and humidity. Protects contents from environmental moisture.
- Chemical resistance — Resistant to most acids, alcohols, and bases at room temperature.
- Clarity — Can be manufactured with high transparency for retail and display applications.
- Heat sealability — Seals easily at relatively low temperatures, making it efficient for automated packaging lines.
Common Applications
LDPE dominates several packaging categories: poly bags (lay flat, gusseted, wicket), shrink wrap and stretch film, agricultural mulch film, construction sheeting, and food packaging where FDA-grade materials are required.
At Flexible Poly Industries, all of our standard poly bags and film products are manufactured from virgin LDPE resin. For applications requiring enhanced tear resistance or puncture strength, we offer LLDPE blends that combine the flexibility of LDPE with improved mechanical properties.
LDPE vs. HDPE vs. LLDPE
The choice between polyethylene types depends on your application. HDPE offers greater stiffness and temperature resistance — think grocery t-shirt bags. LLDPE provides superior puncture and tear resistance — ideal for stretch wrap and heavy-duty liners. LDPE sits in the middle, offering the best balance of flexibility, clarity, and processability for general-purpose packaging.
