About Shrink Film

Shrink film is a polymer film that shrinks tightly around products when heat is applied, creating a conforming, tamper-evident package with a professional retail appearance. The film contracts uniformly in all directions when exposed to heat from a shrink tunnel or heat gun, pulling tight around the product and any included inserts, labels, or tray packaging.

We offer two types of shrink film: PVC (polyvinyl chloride) and polyolefin. PVC shrink film is the most economical option with excellent clarity and is widely used for non-food retail packaging, boxed products, games, media, and general consumer goods. It shrinks at relatively low temperatures and works well with basic shrink equipment. Polyolefin shrink film is stronger, more puncture-resistant, produces less odor during shrinking, and is FDA-approved for direct food contact, making it the preferred choice for food products, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and premium retail items.

Product Details

The choice between PVC and polyolefin depends on your product and industry. PVC is fine for most non-food applications and offers the lowest cost per square foot. Polyolefin costs more but provides superior performance: higher puncture resistance, better optics, consistent shrink behavior across a wider temperature range, and food-safety certification. For food products, polyolefin is not optional — FDA regulations require food-safe materials for any packaging that contacts food.

Both types are available in center-fold rolls for use with L-bar sealers and shrink tunnels, which is the standard equipment configuration for shrink packaging operations. Center-fold film is pre-folded in half lengthwise, so you place the product on the film, seal the open sides with the L-bar sealer, and run the sealed package through the shrink tunnel. The result is a tight, clear, professional wrap with sealed seams on all four sides.

Gauge selection affects both appearance and performance. 75 gauge (0.75 mil) is the standard for most applications, providing good clarity and adequate strength for items up to several pounds. 100 gauge (1.0 mil) is used for heavier items, multi-packs, and products with sharp corners that could puncture thinner film. Using the right gauge prevents film breaks during shrinking and ensures a clean, wrinkle-free finish.

Common Applications

Retail Packaging

Professional sealed presentation for consumer products, boxed goods, games, media, and retail merchandise. Shrink wrap provides a clean, tamper-evident finish that protects products during shipping and on retail shelves. The tight, conforming wrap also holds inserts, labels, and promotional materials in place.

Food Bundling

Multi-packs, variety packs, and food tray packaging using FDA-approved polyolefin shrink film. Common applications include shrink-wrapped produce trays, beverage multi-packs, snack bundles, and deli products. The food-safe material meets 21 CFR requirements for direct food contact.

Product Bundling

Group multiple items into a single package for retail sale or promotional kits. Shrink film holds the items together securely without the need for boxes or additional packaging materials. This is widely used for buy-one-get-one promotions, sample kits, and combo packs.

Tamper Evidence

Sealed shrink wrap provides visible evidence if a product has been opened, which is critical for consumer safety, regulatory compliance, and retail loss prevention. The film must be cut or torn to access the product, making it immediately obvious if the package has been compromised.

Frequently Asked Questions

PVC is cheaper and works well for non-food retail packaging, boxed products, and general consumer goods. Polyolefin is stronger, more puncture-resistant, FDA-approved for food contact, and produces less odor during shrinking. Use polyolefin for food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and premium retail products. If cost is the primary concern and food safety is not a factor, PVC is the economical choice.

You need an L-bar sealer to cut and seal the film around the product, and a heat shrink tunnel to shrink the film tightly around the item. For low-volume operations, a heat gun can substitute for the shrink tunnel. Center-fold film is pre-folded for use with L-bar sealers, which is the standard equipment setup. We can recommend equipment based on your production volume and product size.

75 gauge (0.75 mil) is the standard for most applications and provides good clarity and strength for products up to several pounds. 100 gauge (1.0 mil) is recommended for heavier items, multi-packs, products with sharp corners, and applications where extra holding strength is needed. Using too thin a gauge results in film breaks during shrinking and poor appearance.

Yes. Polyolefin shrink film meets FDA 21 CFR requirements for direct food contact. It is the standard choice for food tray wrapping, produce packaging, bakery bundles, and any food product that requires shrink packaging. PVC shrink film is not FDA-approved for food contact and should only be used for non-food applications.

We stock center-fold shrink film in widths from 12" to 24" in both PVC and polyolefin. The width refers to the total film width when unfolded. To determine the right width, measure the perimeter of your product (width + depth) and add 2-3 inches for sealing and shrink clearance. Contact us for help selecting the right width.

Roll lengths vary by film type and width. PVC rolls are typically 500 feet. Polyolefin rolls range from 2,625 to 4,375 feet depending on width and gauge. The longer polyolefin rolls mean fewer roll changes on your production line, which improves efficiency for high-volume operations.

Yes, for low-volume applications you can use a heat gun to shrink the film after sealing. However, a heat gun provides less uniform heat distribution than a tunnel, which can result in uneven shrinking, wrinkles, or burn spots. For consistent, professional results at any volume, a shrink tunnel is recommended. Contact us for equipment recommendations.
