LDPE and HDPE are both polyethylene plastics, but their molecular structures give them very different properties. Understanding the difference is essential for choosing the right packaging material for your application. Both are thermoplastics made from ethylene monomer, but the polymerization process creates different chain structures that determine flexibility, strength, clarity, and chemical resistance.
LDPE (low-density polyethylene) has a branched molecular structure that creates a softer, more flexible material with excellent clarity. This makes it the standard choice for poly bags, film and sheeting, and shrink wrap. HDPE (high-density polyethylene) has a linear molecular structure that packs tightly, producing a stiffer, stronger material used for bottles, containers, and heavy-duty liners.

When to Choose LDPE (Low-Density Polyethylene)
LDPE is the workhorse of the flexible packaging industry. About 90% of poly bags on the market are made from LDPE because it balances cost, clarity, and performance better than any alternative. Choose LDPE when:
- You need clear, see-through packaging for product visibility
- The product has irregular shapes that need a flexible, conforming bag
- You need a soft feel for retail or consumer-facing packaging
- You are heat sealing and need easy, reliable seals at lower temperatures
- FDA food-contact compliance is required (virgin LDPE meets 21 CFR 177.1520)
- Applications: lay flat bags, gusseted bags, stretch film, shrink wrap, industrial sheeting
LDPE is also the easiest material to heat seal with standard impulse sealers, making it ideal for both manual packing operations and high-speed automated lines. The material seals at 250-350°F, well within the range of inexpensive tabletop impulse sealers.
When to Choose HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene)
HDPE provides superior strength-to-weight ratio, meaning you can use thinner material while maintaining tear and puncture resistance. This makes it the preferred choice for applications where rigidity matters more than flexibility. Choose HDPE when:
- You need maximum strength at minimum thickness (HDPE at 0.5 mil outperforms LDPE at 1 mil)
- The product is heavy or has sharp edges that require tear resistance
- You need higher temperature resistance for autoclaving, hot fill, or steam sterilization
- Moisture barrier is critical (pharmaceutical, chemical, or long-term storage packaging)
- Applications: grocery bags, T-shirt bags, bottle containers, industrial trash liners, chemical drums
The tradeoff with HDPE is clarity and noise. HDPE bags are translucent rather than crystal clear, and they make a crinkling sound when handled. For retail applications where product visibility matters, LDPE is the better choice. For applications where strength and cost per bag matter more than appearance, HDPE wins.
What About LLDPE?
There is a third option worth knowing about: LLDPE (linear low-density polyethylene). LLDPE has a linear structure like HDPE but with short branches like LDPE, giving it a unique combination of properties. LLDPE offers better puncture resistance and tensile strength than LDPE while maintaining similar flexibility. It is commonly used for heavy-duty bags, stretch wrap, and applications where standard LDPE tears too easily. LLDPE costs slightly more than LDPE but can often use a thinner gauge to achieve the same performance, offsetting the price difference.
The Bottom Line
For most poly bag applications in packaging, LDPE is the standard choice. Its clarity, flexibility, and sealing properties make it ideal for food packaging, retail bags, and industrial film. HDPE is better suited for applications requiring stiffness, strength, or heat resistance. Many packaging operations use both: LDPE bags inside HDPE-lined corrugated boxes, for example. When you need extra strength without sacrificing flexibility, LLDPE is the middle ground worth considering.
