Gusseted vs. Lay Flat Bags: Which One Do You Need?

Two of the most common poly bag styles are lay flat and gusseted. Understanding the difference helps you choose the right bag for your product and avoid wasted material.

Lay Flat Bags

A lay flat bag is exactly what it sounds like — a flat tube sealed on one end with an open top. When empty, it lies completely flat. These are the most basic and economical poly bag option.

Best for: Documents, flat clothing items, printed materials, thin parts, hardware in bags. Anything that does not need the bag to expand or stand up.

Gusseted Bags

Gusseted bags have folds (gussets) on the sides or bottom that allow the bag to expand when filled. This creates a box-like shape that accommodates bulky or irregularly shaped items.

Side gussets fold inward on both sides. When opened, the bag forms a rectangular shape — similar to a paper grocery bag. Most common for food products, clothing, and retail packaging.

Bottom gussets fold at the base, allowing the bag to stand upright. Used for products that need to sit flat on a shelf or display.

When to Choose Each

Choose lay flat when your product is thin or flat, you want the lowest cost per bag, and the bag does not need to stand or expand. Choose gusseted when your product has depth or bulk, you need the bag to stand upright, or you want a more professional retail presentation.

A common mistake is using a wider lay flat bag instead of a properly sized gusseted bag. While a wider lay flat bag can technically fit a bulky item, it creates excess material that looks unprofessional and wastes poly. A correctly sized gusseted bag fits snugly and uses less material.
