What It Means for Packaging Buyers

Crude oil climbed 6.4% this week to $101.65/bbl, putting upward pressure on feedstock costs. Packaging buyers should expect continued resin cost pressure if this trend holds through the month.

Naphtha fell 5.3% to $884/ton. Naphtha is the primary feedstock for PE production outside the US. Falling naphtha costs decrease global PE production costs, which influences US export competitiveness and domestic pricing.

China PE futures moved up 4.1% to ¥8,441/ton, signaling strengthening Asian demand. China is the world’s largest PE importer, and their futures market often leads US spot price movements by 2-3 weeks.

The Strait of Hormuz situation continues to dominate energy markets. Any resolution would ease the supply crunch that has driven PE resin prices from $0.42/lb in December to over $0.90/lb today. Until then, supply allocation remains the primary pricing driver, regardless of feedstock cost movements.

Henry Hub natural gas jumped 5.2% to $2.83/MMBtu. US PE producers primarily use ethane (derived from natural gas) as feedstock, giving them a cost advantage over naphtha-based global competitors.

This Week’s Key Headlines

Bottom Line

Rising crude adds upward pressure on an already tight resin market. If you’re planning large packaging orders, consider locking in current prices before the next round of producer price increases. Lead times remain extended due to allocation constraints.
